Back at the coast where the old drum bite is HOT in the lower Neuse River/Pamlico Sound area. Citation fish(40 inches or more) are the norm. They readily take cut mullet or menhaden fished on local circle hook rigs known as "Lupton rigs". Good or bad, these fish are federally protected so don't plan on keeping any of them. The water temeprature is in the high 70's and the bite should continue into early October. For fish you can keep, the fishing for smaller species(trout, flounder, spots, croaker,& slot puppy drum) will continue to improve through Oct into November.
Back home - Striper season should be close when I return. Look for early surface feeding action from bass & stripers around the main river channel near the mouth of Mountain Creek. Follow the fish out to deeper water as the day brightens.
