With water temperatures holding in the low to mid 80F range, stripers are making their annual migration down the main river channel towards the Cowans Ford dam. They can be located at the ends of long points, around humps, in small drainages, and in the old flood plain adjacent to the river channel from Marker 8 to Marker 3. My anglers continue to land average to above average striped bass on live herring and shad fished on down lines. Spotted bass, some largemouth bass, and catffish are contributing to good mixed creels. It's wise to keep a casting rig ready for occasional spotted bass surface action throughout the early morning. An early start also helps beat the heat, and avoid the summer pleasure boat traffic.
